SLASHER FILMS - Jason X (2001)

Every genre has cliches, but how well do the Friday the 13th films follow the slasher film rules?

Jason X (2001) is Friday the Space!

The following analysis may contain spoilers for

Jason X (2001)

Unheeded Warning

"You brought him onboard?" ~ Rowan.
"He's in the next lab. We're quite safe." ~ Professor Lowe.
"Safe?" ~ Rowan.
"Our scans reveal him to be very dead." ~ Lowe.
"Could your scans be wrong? I think you just get rid of him, Professor. He's too dangerous." Rowan.

1a.  Warnings will not be believed...
i.  Source - Rowan.
ii.  Dismissable - She is, both in the near future and far future.
iii.  Authorities - None in the far future, some in the near future, who ignore Rowan, and are killed really quickly
iv.  Crazy - Rowan is not portrayed as such.
1b.  Happened before - Many, many times. But not in space.

1c.  General eeriness - A little.

Sex & Nudity

"Why don't you just admit it? You want me." ~ Janessa.
"I couldn't be with a girl whose balls are bigger than mine." ~ Tsunaron.

2a.  Nudity -
i. Female Nudity - Rowan, implied nudity. KM-14, breasts. VR campers breasts.  Some implied nudity in sex scenes.
ii. Male Nudity - None.
iii. Nudity Equals Death -
Only the sex scene participants died (unless you count the VR campers as real).iv. Public vs Private Nudity - Rowan's is public (but medical and covered) the other are private.
2b.  Sex -
i.  Death - Professor Lowe and Janessa (his student) have kinky sex, Lowe dies much later. Stoney and Kinsa have sex, Stoney is killed immediately afterwards, Kinsa slowly loses it and eventually kills herself in an accident.
ii.  Random Sex - Lowe and Janessa doesn't seem to be a relationship, but seems to be regular rather than random. Both die.
iii. Relationship Sex - Stoney and Kinsa seem to be in a relationship. Both die.
iv.  Rape - None.

Death will be a punishment for...

"Hey, do you want a beer?" ~ VR Girl #1.
"Or do you wanna smoke some pot?" ~ VR Girl #2.
"Or we can have premarital sex" ~ VR Girl #1.
"We love premarital sex!" ~ Both.

Once again Jason is just a killing machine. There is a suggestion that the VR campers distract him with thier transgressive nature, though.

3a.   Sex - See 2b for details. There is a suggestion that sex happening (Kinsa and Stoney) awakens Jason and sets him on his killing spree.

3b.  Nudity - See 2a for details.

...Anything.  But especially:

"We've got him frozen right here on the ship." ~ Professor Lowe.

Jason Voorhees

8a.  The Location - No, it's space.

8b.  The Final Girl - Seemingly not.

RULE #10
The Sequel Will Be Bigger/More Formulaic

"A box of DVDs is not a gold mine." ~ Dieter Perez.

10a.  They will follow the rules more - Followed less.

10b.  They will be more formulaic - Change of venue, deliberately hit some formula points.

10c.  There will be more T&A - Just less than Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and a lot less than Jason Vs Freddy.

10d.  There will be more and bigger deaths of the victims - Mostly.

10e.  The killer’s death will be bigger - You might argue it was (burnt up on re-entry) but it's not really shown.

10f.  The killer will be less realistic - Previously a worm that travels from body to body. Even the Uber-Jason cyborg is more realistic than that.

"StatisticaI probabiIity of survivaI just went up to... fifty-three percent." ~ KM-14
"Wanna go for a hundred?" ~ Tsunaron

The following rules are followed:  1, 7, 9
The following rules are partially followed:  2, 3, 5, 6, 10.
The following rules are not followed:  8.
The following rules are mostly not applicable: 4.
